Many think that because we live in a South Pacific environment that it never gets cool or that the weather is always perfect or that we don't have vast differences in taste. Hi. I'm Zane. SI people dress the way they want to with some limitations. Living in a small society can be difficult, if certain types of clothing or lack of clothing is condoned. There is no statute against certain types of clothing, but there is a certain unstated rule. We try not to wear anything that would upset another person on purpose. These include thongs on the beaches or less. These also include sweatshirts and other shirts with drawings or messages that could be construed as inflammatory or of bad taste. The definitions associated with these arbitrary words is left to the individual and the society at large. Parents remain the strong power in determining some of these meanings for their children who want to dress like everyone else in the world, particularly the west with its powerful music and video influence.

In order to compromise, society had to accept the expression of the young and impressionable, so they could feel part of the world, and the young and impressionable had to understand what was at stake for SI as a nation within a world. Therefore, Wednesdays were chosen as the day of expression where everyone was immune from criticism. The agreement was designed primarily to placate the young, until we found out, when we instituted this concession in March of 1980, that many of the older members of our society also had something to say. We found that a sweatshirt representing the Gray Panthers (an older rights organization) was just as predominant in the seventies as those for the Black Panthers (a black reactionary group). We found that rock group T-shirts were popular with all age groups and even more. It was considered amusing that we, as a society, learned from our own form of moderation. It was quite enlightening. Wednesday still stands today, but more of a model to those outside our own society than to those within. It was pleasant to realize that we all were more tolerant of one another's expression than we originally thought. There has been a thought going around to allow thongs on the beaches Thursday mornings before 10am, but that is still blowing in the wind.
