xFACTS & FANCY
Both of these groups comprise a dual-island group
that was formed when a canal was dug in 1995 creating East and West Canalville.
Once completed, a bridge was built linking the two. Until that time, there was one town with a portage across the expanse from the
northern waterways to the south. It was called Midportage.
The Gavin
Group, including its adjunct island, Andriana Island, are noted for their
industry. These islands host our infrastructure
utilities including power, water processing, engineering and research. SI's major shipbuilding
company, NavyShips, is housed in the Harbor just east of South Powertown and has produced many of our own ships
and yachts and has designed and constructed many vessels for clients across the
world. NavyShips also tends to our own SI surface navy and two submarines.
SI's water treatment plant and desalinator systems reside on
Deltaberg, and Mechanix hosts our main powerplant and its auxiliary services
complex including massive research facilities and laboratories. Those who
elect to live near their work, mainly have their homes in Halflee and Mechanix
with isolated homes and estates on Andriana. Mama Quad remains an associated resort for workers who elect to take vacations on
weekends, and the Upland Plateau is the highest residence community in the SI Group
of Islands. The Gavin Group has a population of approximately 5,004 people
working and living three shifts in our tropical paradise.
Because
of the high population of the Gavins, there are numerous entertainment spots
including three "protected" swimming areas utilizing the
environmentally friendly screening to keep out unwanted guests and preventing
any appreciable impact on the waters and their natural conditions. Oddly,
even though there is much industry, the one bay, namely Nature Bay, is the only
sanctuary that allows a visitor on a vessel not to see any evidence of humanity
other than the Nature Bridge, which is constructed in a manner to make it as
unobtrusive as possible. Not in keeping with normal procedure, Gavin
Islands has three islands off the southwest coast that have never been
named. Someone suggested there be a contest to name them, but nothing came
of the idea. Therefore, they remain unnamed to this day. They are
simply called "The Islands."
